One of the skills that you have to learn if you are going to be successful at poker is how to bluff. That being said you do have to be careful to not over rate its value. There are certainly times when it makes sense to bluff but it is far from the only thing that you have to be able to do in order to be a good poker player.
There is no doubt that bluffing is an important part of poker but it is by no means the only thing that is important in the game. In reality it is fairly rare that you are able to win solely by bluffing, you ultimately have to have the cards. That being said if you don’t bluff your game will become quite predictable and that will make it much harder to win. It is therefore important that you learn how to bluff but even more importantly when to bluff.
There are a couple of reasons that you would want to bluff, the first is to make people think that you have a stronger hand than you actually do in the hopes of getting them to drop out. The other reason that you would want to bluff is to convince people that you have a weaker hand than you actually do in order to keep them in. this second type of bluffing is far more important as it is critical to your being able to win at poker. That being said in a surprising number of cases it is possible to do quite well without having to bluff at all.
When you are first learning to play poker it is best to not bluff at all and this will continue to be true as long as you play with mediocre players. Most inexperienced players will bluff far too often and they will also play their hands far too often. The result is that if you just stick to playing the cards that you have and only playing when you have a strong hand you can do quite well. As you move on to playing with better players however you will have to start bluffing in order to be successful.
Once you reach a level where bluffing is necessary you are still going to want to be very cautious about how often you do it. In most cases it is best not to, you want to do it just enough to reduce the predictability of your game. Even then you are not going to want to do it unless you have an out. The key to being successful at poker is money management and that means making sure that you don’t suffer any large losses. When you bluff you put yourself at risk of taking large losses so you have to be very careful.
Welcome to the dazzling and wonderful world of poker terminology. Just like doctors use their strict terminology, investment bankers generally use fiscal terms, poker players have their characteristic terminology which has been incessantly growing with the increasing population of poker players across the world.
This article would help you to acquaint and fine tune yourself to the current lingo used by poker players. Most of the poker players are aware of phrases like flop, steamed, all in and so on.
Please read the following additions to enhance your poker glossary.
Alcohol abuse refers to the spilling of alcohol on the surface of the poker tables.
Asswipee phrase indicates that a player or an opponent would be able to educate you on how he could play the game you lost in a better way than you.
The term carrier monkey is given to those poker players who return swiftly from the rest room which creates a doubt amongst other players whether he has washed his hands or not. This is sarcastic humor.

Dario has been known for making sick calls, and this is just absolutely beautiful. Dario Minieri – you teach them donkeys!
I think Kathy Liebert needs to go back to Poker Etiquette School. She’s always running her mouth about being underrated and not being respected as a poker player – but when you do a round of freaking high fives when you hit a card, only to be punished by the poker gods and see your opponent handle the luckboxing with class – you have a lot to learn!
Obviously the money was going in on this hand. These WPT Final Tables are just a crapshoot, and AQ = el nutso for sheezey!
Another basic move that many poker players — especially those who are new to the game — do not realize, or at least do not follow, involves staying in the game when you should not. It does not matter how much money you have in the pot. If you have a sub par hand, the chances are high that you probably will not get it back. So, if you continue feeding money into the pot, you are essentially just losing more and more.
Be nice to your wallet. Pull out and fold while you can, especially if there is no hope of improving the hand you currently have.
Folding is not a sign of weakness. In fact, if you do not do it at least occasionally, your opponents are going to find it very easy to goad you into playing a losing hand. That means more money for them, way less for you — and who wants that?
So, picking up where we left off, let’s start talking about bluffing. You do not want to bluff just because you can. Bluffing just for the sake of it is a real donkey move. Sadly, it is also something a lot of novice players do.
Listen. There is not rule one in poker that says you have to bluff at least once, twice, three times a game. In fact, you never have to bluff at all if you do not want to bluff. Besides, bluffing is an art. You actually should not do it unless you have it down to a science and can actually make it work for you — which is harder than you might think.
Now, it has to be said that, without a doubt, Texas Hold ‘Em is probably the most popular variation of poker being played right now. As such, most of the rules and strategies detailed in this series of posts will apply to that particular game. However, a lot of rules are universal, so many of them can be used across the board in other variations as well.
There are a couple of terms you need to familiarize yourself with as you begin this game. For instance, this game uses community cards, which means that they can be used by all players. The dealer lays these cards out, face up, in the middle of the table so they are viewable by all. The first three community cards are known as the Flop. The fourth card is known as the Turn, while the fifth and final card is regarded as the River. The two cards you as a player are dealt — face down — are known as your hole cards. You use them in conjunction with the community cards to create the best hand.
Poker has always been a popular game but thanks to the recent emergence of televised poker games as well as the growing interest in the World Series of Poker, or WSOP, it has never been more popular than it is right now. That is bringing a lot of new players into the game — and if you are one of them, realize that learning things from the bottom up is going to make you a fantastic player very quickly.
You need to know the basics. Now, rules can only take you so far. As you learn the rules, you also need to put them into play. So I need you to do something here: for each new rule, tip, or strategy presented in this series of post, do what you can to put it into practice so that you can actually apply firsthand experience to what you learn.
Now, that does not mean you should run right out and start playing high stakes at a bricks and mortar casino or at an online one. Just invite a couple of buddies over and play for fun!
